The Locket

For a long time, I've been shopping around for a round, silver locket. I think I saw someone with one years ago, and I've always wanted one. But like most things that I want, I forget that I want them, and then suddenly I remember that I wanted it. So the other day, upon remembering this long-lost material want, I Googled for it and found it at: http://www.billbarnes.com/product.asp?product=9439

It's exactly what I wanted: Plain, silver, round, 20" chain so it doesn't need to show, and holds two pictures.

But then it occurred to me that I had nothing I wanted to put in the locket. The whole point of a locket is to literally put something near and dear to your heart. What the hell could I put in my locket?

I considered putting in a picture of my dad and stepmom, but that seems cheesy.

I could pick two "special" friends to be in there, but A, which friends, and B, isn't that weird to wear a picture of friends around your neck? What happens if you get mad? Do you swap out the pics?

And there certainly isn't any man I currently know who would qualify for such a high status position in my life. (In fact, there's only been one man who could have ever filled my locket, so to speak. But he was British, so it would have never worked out. Those Brits are basically gay.)

I then came up with the "great idea" of buying the locket and putting in something that symbolized what was important to me in my life.

And here's where I got stuck.

I have no idea what's important to me in my life.

What would I want to place in this locket that would live near my heart? What is it that gets me up in the morning and makes me want to continue on living? And will it fit into that damn locket?

I know these facts:

I really enjoy my Jenny Craig chocolate cake. Two or three of them, and you've got a real dessert.

I love re-runs of CSI: Las Vegas, Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU.

I love having high-speed internet connection at home.

So do I insert some chocolate, a Qwest logo and a picture of a scale into the locket?

I even considered a photo of my pewter KitchenAid mixer. I love that thing so much. If there was a fire, it would be the first thing I grabbed, along with my Charles Jourdan sling-backs.

Then maybe I'd help out some people once I knew my mixer and shoes were safe.

Point is, I don't know what to put in my locket. And until I do, I am not buying it. If you're going to hold something that close to your heart, you should make sure it belongs there.

That said, I really need a new purse.
